Bairnsdale Library

The East Gippsland Shire Council wanted to upgrade their Bairnsdale Library and asked for some concept designs to take to the local community. The concept design incorporated the historic Mechanics’ Institute Hall which has been the home of the library for more than half a century. The design applies contemporary thinking of library spaces as places to gather, learn and engage for the broader community. The buildings have been designed as flexible spaces and a large civic courtyard become the centerpiece of a community minded design.
This library concept is a bold reimagining of the role of libraries, transforming the space into a multifunctional community hub. Experimental in form, the building almost leans against the adjoining historic Mechanics Institute Hall. The design was seen as controversial and too progressive with the Shire electing not to proceed to the next stage of development.
